Chinese Proverb: ‘One Picture is Worth Ten Thousand Words’
This picture comes from the Facebook fan page of Frank Sommerville, a television news anchor at KTVU in northern California. He says:
So for those of you who think tv can be glamorous, this is how i spent my morning, learning how to take out my daughter’s braids. It takes a long time and a lot of patience!
BBN Says:
These moments of hair care are bonding activities for children and parents. There is lots to learn about each other in these moments – sometimes lengthy sessions – of verbal and even non verbal communication. Fathers typically take longer because they are hyper concerned with not messing up. While Mothers are usually just trying to get it done.
For young Black girls, hair is especially important. Societal pressures glamorize and promote straight and blond. For White parents who are parents of Black children, hair care is a must learn part of parenting. We are glad to see this Dad taking the time and interest to know his daughter’s hair.
We thank Frank for sharing this image.
